
Gombe State’s ACReSAL Project Receives Praise from the World Bank Task Team Leader
Dr. Joy Iganaya Agene, the World Bank Task Team Leader for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), has praised Gombe State’s ACReSAL initiative for its effective landscape management and restoration efforts. Her remarks came during a recent site inspection as part of a three-day hybrid Implementation Support Mission in Gombe, where she assessed key projects within the FCE(T) catchment area.
The inspection highlighted several significant achievements, including engineered landfills for waste management, innovative water harvesting systems, and various livelihood support programs. Dr. Agene expressed her satisfaction with the gully control measures and catchment management practices, emphasizing their vital role in restoring degraded land and enhancing living conditions for local communities.
In her address, Dr. Agene commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his unwavering support of the ACReSAL project. She noted significant developments, including the successful completion of the 21-kilometer FCE(T) gully, an infrastructure improvement that enhances safety for residents and protects local infrastructure.
Dr. Agene urged community members to maintain these critical investments, highlighting the importance of sustained efforts to attract additional support and future interventions.
Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, expressed appreciation to the World Bank team for their ongoing technical assistance. He announced plans to expand waste management initiatives in the project’s second phase, aimed at improving operational efficiency, creating job opportunities, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Engr. Imran Khan Amin, Area Manager for Triacta Nigeria Limited, the contractor responsible for the gully control work, reported that the project is currently 95 percent complete. He confirmed that while concrete work is finalized, bioremediation and backfilling are still pending but will be concluded shortly.
Local beneficiary Justina Yakubu expressed gratitude for the intervention, underscoring the positive impact of the Gombe State ACReSAL initiatives. She noted that the project’s commitment to improving community livelihoods has remained a focal point throughout its implementation.
