Gombe ACReSAL Project Launches Model Farm to Drive Mechanization and Organic Farming

GOMBE, Nigeria – The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project in Gombe State has unveiled a new model farmhouse designed to serve as a center of excellence for agricultural training and climate-smart farming.

The facility, established under the state’s ACReSAL framework, is set to function as a dedicated training hub for extension specialists. According to the Gombe State Project Coordinator, Sani Adamu Jauro, the farmhouse will expose officers to modern farming techniques, soil health assessment, and improved advisory methodologies to enhance service delivery to rural farmers.

Driving Mechanization and Access

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Jauro identified mechanization as one of the project’s most significant achievements in the agricultural sector. He highlighted that with the right equipment; modern farming systems can enable a family to efficiently cultivate and harvest over 100 hectares of land.

To bridge the gap for smallholder farmers, the project has procured and distributed multipurpose tractors to Local Government Areas (LGAs). These tractors are made available to farmers at subsidized rates, dramatically reducing the time required for land preparation.

“Many rural farmers cannot afford heavy equipment individually,” Jauro noted. “This intervention ensures they have access to the technology they need to increase productivity.”

A Shift Toward Organic Fertilizer

In a parallel push for sustainability, the ACReSAL project has established a recycling plant focused on compost production. The plant aims to provide organic fertilizer alternatives to farmers, addressing concerns over the long-term effects of chemical fertilizers on soil health.

Dr. Jauro warned that excessive reliance on synthetic inputs contributes to soil degradation. Pilot demonstrations conducted with agricultural specialists are already showcasing the benefits of organic alternatives.

“Healthier soils will produce healthier food,” he stated. “Transitioning to organic fertilizer is key to addressing soil degradation and building sustainable agricultural systems.”

Midterm Review and Inclusivity

The project has now completed three years of its six-year lifecycle. A midterm review is scheduled for March to assess progress and recalibrate strategies where necessary.

Dr. Jauro also emphasized that participation in project clusters is inclusive of both men and women, with deliberate efforts being made to encourage and facilitate women’s involvement in all agricultural activities.
