Gombe ACReSAL, Northern First Ladies Take Climate Action, Plant Trees.
No less than 14 First Ladies under the aegis of the Northern Governors Wives Forum (NGWF) supported the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes – ACReSAL in tree planting at the Government Girls’ Mega College Doma.
In her keynote address during the event Gombe state First Lady and Chair of Northern Governors’ Wives Forum, Hajiya Asma’u Inuwa Yahaya said the participation of the northern state governors’ wives in the tree planting was a form of their social dedication to honor not only what trees are desired to represent on a social level, but to also honor the importance of what trees will provide to the northern region through its lifetime.
She said the theme of the campaign “Greening for Food and Shelter” was crafted to give credence to the significant role trees play in saving lives through the food they provide, the shade they produce, the shelter they provide for birds and small animals, and the aesthetics they give to the appearance of the landscape.
Lamenting how vulnerable the northern region is to land degradation, the Gombe First Lady reiterated that their support to the tree planting was part of their efforts to restore hope and contribute to the restoration of one million hectares of degraded land in the region under the ACReSAL Project, which aligned with the federal government plan of restoring four million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
While commending the Gombe state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for facilitating the planting of 3 million trees in his first tenure under the 3G project, the First Lady tasked every human to play an active role in planting and caring for trees to help provide food, and shelter, offset land degradation and deforestation.
She commended the Gombe State ACReSAL for the continuous support to the 3G by greening the environment and saving lives through tree planting.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Gombe state commissioner of Education, Prof. Aishatu Umar Maigari said the state has established forest and climate change clubs at schools as a way of addressing climate change effects.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative, Dr. Barnabas Malle commended the First Ladies for participating in the tree planting, which according to him complemented the state government’s climate actions.
On his part, the Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro thanked the Gombe state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for the support to ACReSAL and good policies for sustainable landscape management.
Dr. Sani Adamu called on the 19 First Ladies of the 19 northern ACReSAL states to borrow a leaf from the Gombe state First Ladies and render support to the project for the benefit of humanity.
