GOMBE STATE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TRANSFERS LAND TO ACRESAL FOR ADVANCED PLANT NURSERY
To promote environmental sustainability and educational innovation, the Gombe State Ministry of Education has officially handed over a parcel of land to the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project for the establishment of a state-of-the-art amenity plant nursery.
During the handover ceremony, Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, described the gesture as a significant sacrifice by the Ministry, emphasizing its alignment with global learning initiatives and environmental stewardship. She noted that under the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, education in Gombe State has evolved to incorporate ecological consciousness, expressing confidence that the nursery will serve as a flagship program for research and learning.
Prof. Maigari also commended ACReSAL’s ongoing support in tree planting efforts and its collaboration with the northern governor’s wife on the GGC Doma orchard initiative.
Echoing her sentiments, Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Saidu Mohammed Fawu, acknowledged ACReSAL’s pivotal role in environmental interventions across the state, particularly in gully erosion control at the FCE and GGC Doma sites. He praised the partnership between the Education Ministry and ACReSAL, expressing optimism about its long-term impact.
Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, revealed that the site will host one of the most advanced plant nurseries in North-Eastern Nigeria. The facility will include a nursery, arboretum, and laboratory, designed to foster green infrastructure, support climate-smart agriculture, and advance plant health research. It will also provide high-quality plant materials to the public.
Dr. Jauro extended his gratitude to Governor Yahaya for approving the land’s use, which, according to him, underscores the administration’s commitment to integrating education with environmental resilience.
