The Gombe State government has signed a ₦48.6 billion contract for the Government Girls Mega College (GGMC) Doma Erosion Control Project, aimed at addressing gully erosion and mitigating environmental risks in the area.
During the signing ceremony, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that the 18-kilometer flood control initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring sustainable development despite environmental challenges.
“The GGMC Doma Erosion and Flood Control Project is a bold declaration of our resolve to protect lives and sustain development amid ecological threats,” Yahaya stated.
As part of broader efforts under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative, the governor announced new investments in agricultural resilience, including the procurement of 12 tractors, 12 tricycles, three Hilux vans, and a bus to enhance operations within key ministries.
Yahaya commended the World Bank ACReSAL Project for its continued support and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to fostering partnerships with international organizations to attract further resources to the state.
The contract was awarded to Triacta Nigeria Limited, with Governor Yahaya urging the construction firm to uphold quality and efficiency throughout the project’s execution.
Commissioner of Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Mohammed Saidu Fawu, revealed that ₦2.1 billion has been allocated for compensating 514 individuals affected by the project, adding that upon completion, the intervention is expected to benefit approximately 1.8 million people directly and indirectly.
Managing Director of Triacta Nigeria Limited, Elie Farhat, expressed gratitude to the state government for the trust placed in his company, pledging to deliver results that align with expectations.
Local leaders, including Akko Local Government Chairman Muhammad Danladi Adamu and Lamido Gona Umar Abdulkadir Abdulsalam II, lauded the initiative, highlighting its significance in protecting communities from environmental hazards.
Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, Gombe State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, in a vote of thanks, highlighted the successful outcomes of previous ACReSAL interventions under Governor Yahaya’s leadership. He noted improvements in public health, increased school enrollment rates, and the overall enhancement of local business conditions.
The event concluded with the commissioning of agricultural and operational vehicles, as well as the inauguration of the newly named “Inuwa Bridge” in Doma.,
